Nathan Fillion, Linda Cardellini Join "Super"

Nathan Fillion, Linda Cardellini, Gregg Henry and Michael Rooker have all joined the cast of James Gunn's "Super," a comedic twist on the superhero genre for Ambush Entertainment, reports Dark Horizons.

According to Dark Horizons: Rainn Wilson, Ellen Page, Liv Tyler and Kevin Bacon have already been cast in the project about Frank (Wilson), a seemingly average guy who is madly in love with his troubled wife, Sarah (Tyler). But when Sarah leaves Frank for Jacques (Bacon), a smooth-talking drug dealer, Frank transforms into pseudo-superhero The Crimson Bolt, stakes out Jacques sleazy hideaway, and wages a one-man war on crime.

Fillion plays a pop-icon who inspires Frank to don his tights, Cardellini is the woman who ultimately delivers love to Frank, Henry plays a local cop who goes hot on the chase of The Crimson Bolt, and Rooker is a henchman of Jacques.

The Crimson Bolt makes up for his lack of powers by using a trusty pipe wrench. Every superhero needs a sidekick and so enters Page, who plays Libby, a cute sociopathic teen working at the local comic book store, who morphs into ‘Boltie’ and teams with Frank to take Jacques down.

Sean Gunn, Stephen Blackeheart, Mikaela Hoover, Lloyd Kaufman, Valentine Miele, Andre Royo and Steve Agee also star.

Projects that try to take an original and unique spin on the comic book/superhero genre are always interesting to me. But sometimes you’ll get a super dud, such as “My Super Ex-Girlfriend.” But this time around, I think things will turn out well.

Rainn Wilson might be one of the most underrated actors in Hollywood. He is absolutely hilarious on “The Office,” but he has yet to break out into films. He starred in “The Rocker,” but it received mixed reviews. I’m hoping that this film will be his breakout role, and the additions of Fillion and Cardellini are smart moves as well.

Filming is currently underway in Louisiana.
