"Inglourious Basterds," "A Single Man" & "The Road" Ineligible For WGA Awards

It’s awards season, so this story is newsworthy although it isn’t much of a big deal.

It was revealed this week that "Inglourious Basterds,"written by Quentin Tarantino, "A Single Man," written by Tom Ford and "The Road," written by Joe Penhall, are ineligible in the WGA awards race, leaving the field a bit more wide open.

According to the Playlist: The reasoning behind the decision is quite simple: none of these guys are members of the WGA. But apparently, you can still be nominated for a WGA award even if you're not a member as long as the film has to be made according to the protocols in the guild's Minimum Basic Agreement. The Weinsteins were already aware of this fact and didn't even bother sending screeners to members of the guild.

Even though this isn’t any type of Earth-shattering news, as a writer and a fan of writing, I always look forward to the Writer’s Guild Awards.

All three films seemed to have screenplay’s that could possibly win this award, but instead they will just have to wait and see if any of them scores an Academy Award nomination. Although they don’t qualify for the WGA awards, they are all in contention to be nominated for Oscars.

The WGA nominations will be announced on Monday.
